Keeping a Long Distance Romance Alive - The Lump, By Sophie
Oct. 6, 2009
Keeping a long distance romance alive is not always easy. For Gianni and me, talking on the phone in the middle of the night is just one of the ways we are able to do this. Since we have opposite work schedules the middle of the night is a time when we are both available. I go to sleep at my regular time while Gianni works. When he gets home, he calls me, wakes me up and we talk.
It was 2:30 am on an early Tuesday morning. I was lying in bed and I had just got done talking on the phone with Gianni. I reached over and put my cell phone on my night stand. It was a cool evening so I slipped back under my blanket. I tried to get back to sleep, but I could not get comfortable; the dog was in the middle of the bed and the cat was walking all over me. I tossed and turned. Usually I am able to fall right back to sleep. This night was different and I was beginning to wonder if our long distance romance was taking a toll on me getting enough sleep.
In a last ditch effort to sleep, I turned over on my side and my arm naturally went underneath my pillow. Inside my pillow I could feel the “lump”. I did not even need to get the “lump” out of the pillow. Just knowing it was there offered me such comfort and reassurance that I was sleeping within a matter of seconds. I bet you are wondering how a “lump” can keep a long distance romance alive.
Well, first you need to know what the “lump” really is. The “lump” is a t-shirt that belongs to Gianni. Every Sunday, as we are saying goodbye, Gianni gives me a t-shirt of his and he puts his cologne on it. The shirt goes into my pillow so when I am sleeping I know that it is there and I feel like we are together. It makes me feel closer to Gianni when I can smell the shirt or just hold it. I usually can’t get the shirt out until about Wednesday of each week as it makes me too sad, but knowing that it is there is a huge comfort to me. My advice to help keep a long distance romance alive: get your own “lump”. It does not have to be a t-shirt; it can be anything that belongs to the other person. No matter what your “lump”, it will help you to feel closer to your loved one, even when you are apart.
