What is Love? By Sophie

Sept. 4, 2009

What is love? When you talk to that special someone, and your heart skips a beat, does that mean you are in love? How about when you can’t stop thinking about someone or when your palms are all sweaty when you are near them? If only it were that easy to tell when you are in love. But as most of us already know, it is just not that simple.

The Bible tells us that love is “patient, kind, does not envy, does not boast, is not proud, is not rude, love is not self-seeking, is not easily angered, keeps no record of wrongs, does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres, it never fails”. So that’s it, right? WRONG!! How do you know when you are actually feeling love for someone? Love is certainly not as black and white as we would want it to be.

Before I met Gianni, I was convinced that love only existed in Danielle Steele novels and in “chick-flick” movies. I honestly felt that the strong emotions portrayed in books and movies were not real. How could anyone feel so strongly about another person? It just did not seem possible to me. To me, being married for a long period of time simply meant that the two people tolerated each other and were able to co-exist.

Obviously I now feel that love does exist, but exactly what is love? To answer this I would like to start when I first met Gianni. We had an instant connection from our first on-line chat. We had so much in common that after a week or two of chatting on-line it seemed that we were already good friends. Friendship is the foundation of any loving relationship. As time went on, we continued to discover how much we had in common. I began to miss him if I did not get a chance to talk with him or if he did not send me an e-mail as quickly as I wanted him to. I did not even think about what all this meant; I just knew that we were great friends and had a wonderful connection.

When you ask me the question, what is love? I would answer by describing how Gianni treats me and how he shows love to me. Gianni shows respect to me like no other person in my life has shown to me. He makes me feel like I am the most beautiful, smartest, funniest person in the world. He points out qualities in me that I never knew existed. He sees me in a way that no one has ever seen. He sees me as someone who is special and unique. He has given me a gift that no one else has ever given me, the gift of knowing that I am special to him and that I am worth loving.

Love is a precious gift. I feel like the luckiest woman in the world to have been given this gift. Once given the gift, I would like to think that I am giving Gianni the same gift of love back to him. Treating him as he deserves to be treated, with respect and letting him know how special and unique he is to me. That, is love…
